What is vermicomposting?
“Vermicomposting” uses the Latin prefix “vermi” (meaning worm), while “worm composting” is a more straightforward English description of the same biological process.
Worm composting is a process that relies on worms, most commonly red wigglers, to break down organic waste and
turning food waste into nutrient-rich fertilizer (worm castings), which improves soil health and plant growth.
Unlike traditional hot composting, worm composting is a cold process that uses microorganisms in the worms’ digestive system to create nutrient-dense castings, a soil amendment highly prized by gardeners for the ability to improve soil structure and promote plant growth.
